Gun Control, Sex Education, Evolution, and Dog Poop

April 8, 2009

This post has some seemingly random thoughts, but I thought I would provoke some thinking.

Is it just me, or has gun violence just gone nuts?  I know many will call for gun control.  I am not sure how effective that would be since there are so many millions of guns out there.  There are also the cases where children find a gun and a tragedy occurs.  I think this is where we can learn from sex education.

Clearly it’s a good point that people make that sex education needs to be taught in schools because kids are going to “do it” anyway.  Well, since kids are likely to find a loaded gun (especially if they are looking), doesn’t it make sense to teach them safe gun handling techniques at school?  Perhaps a trip to the shooting range with an instructor will help prevent disaster?  Obviously, giving a 12- or 13-year-old the knowledge of how to handle a loaded gun, with instructions to just leave it alone, will cut down on the tragedy of using it incorrectly.  If they know how dangerous it is they will certainly not be tempted to try it, will they?  (Never mind that shooting a gun can be thrilling and really fun.)

And then there is the whole evolution thing.  This evolved into this and that evolved into that.  To me that is all boring talk.  What is mind-blowing to me is all of the natural laws that are involved that make life possible at all.  So, how does a natural law come into being, that’s what is interesting to me.

Finally, dog poop.  For some reason dog poop has become a symbol to me.  Imagine making your perfect gourmet meal.  Now bake a little bit of dog poop and crumble it up.  How much poop can you add to your gourmet meal before you won’t touch it?  Even though the poop is tasteless and harmless, if you are like me you won’t tolerate any of it in your meal!  So why do we allow negative and impure things into our minds and our mouths all day long?

Oh, and another random thought.  Why does it seem like the people who don’t want God telling them what to do are many times the same people who do want government to tell them what to do?

And since transparency is one of the things I believe in, here is where I stand.  Neither sex education nor gun education should be taught at school.  I have a concealed-carry handgun license.  I don’t believe in evolution.  I do believe in God.  I believe you can change your life by changing what goes into your mind – the choice is yours.

Do They Care…Continued

November 25, 2008

Earlier I wrote about a new study that shows promiscuity in young girls increases directly in proportion to the amount of adult themed sexually oriented TV that they watch, and I posed the question to those who put out this type of TV and star in the shows, “Do they care about the influence they are having?”  We know that promiscuity leads to sexually transmitted diseases and to unwanted pregnancy, and both of these lead to many issues in young girls, the most severe of which is suicide.

I had the opportunity to talk with Rabbi Daniel Lapin www.rabbidaniellapin.com about this issue.  He spends a great deal of time on the public stage debating and discussing these issues and points out how a faulty point of view leads to dire consequences in our society.  For example, he explained to me that there is massive statistical evidence that when sex education is taught in schools promiscuity goes up, and along with it sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy.  Of course, when you mention this in a debate format the defense is always, “They are going to have sex anyway, so we need to teach them to do it safely.”

Rabbi Lapin then went on to explain to me why the teaching of sex education in schools is not about what is best for our kids, but rather it is about indoctrinating them into a secular world view.  He poses this question: “If it is true that sex education will help prevent kids from getting sexually transmitted diseases and getting pregnant, then we should also teach gun safety in the schools.  After all, kids are going to find a gun anyway, and then a tragedy will happen.”

We have had some great comments on the Do they care? post.  I agree with Drew that much of what is on TV is a result of greed.  I did some research on liberal and conservative and the definitions of each and I have to disagree with Drew on his assessment of my use of the term, but in the end that is not really important.  What is important is: Do We Care?

Do we care enough to prevent unwanted consequences?  After all, if you believe in gun control because the unwanted consequence is that a child will find a gun and a horrible tragedy will take place, then you should absolutely want to stand up and fight the trash that is on TV because the scale of tragedy is a thousand times greater in terms of destroyed lives.  Saying “parents have the ability to put a parental lock on the TV is enough defense” makes the case for those who believe gun owners are responsible enough to secure their own guns.
