The Problem With Truth

June 8, 2009

What is truth?  There was a time when that was a pretty easy one to answer.  Now I am concerned that not only do people not know what the truth is, but they don’t even care to know.

Today it is “ok” to have your own understanding of what the “truth” is.  In fact, the PC Police have done a good job of intimidating anyone who would claim that they know the truth, especially if their truth makes someone feel bad.  These days it is perfectly acceptable to believe that people can have their “own” set of truths.

Wait a second!  If two “truths” contradict each other then at least one of them must not be true!  (Every time I see this in action I think of a popular song from my college days that had a line that said, “Two men say they are Jesus, one of them must be wrong.”)  Yep, people have different understandings of what is true, but our understanding of what is true has no bearing on whether it is true or not.  Like Dad says, “You don’t really break nature’s laws; you just confirm them, like the law of gravity, for example.”

I just finished reading (again) George Orwell’s classic, Animal Farm.  If you haven’t read it, you need to.  Here is the short version.  The animals revolt and take over the farm from the evil humans.  The animals, led by the pigs, create a set of laws to run by, the most important one being “all animals are equal.”  As time goes by the pigs gain more power (because, after all, they are smarter than the other animals) and they begin to change the laws (because, after all, they are smarter than the other animals).  The main law gets re-written to say: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

When America was born, our leaders did a great job of declaring that our rights do not come from man, but from God.  Why?  Because people are basically pigs and will change the laws to benefit the pigs.  If rights come from God, then pigs can say what they want, but they would be wrong.

Not too long ago the pigs decided that it was ok for people to have different views of the truth.  After all, the pigs are the smartest animals.  The pigs have given us permission to believe what we want, and act on it, even if it contradicts truth.  Why?  Because now the pigs are writing the laws and with that they are controlling the animals.  Don’t you see? It’s easier to have faith in a pig you can see who lets you do what you want, than to have faith in God who says you can do what you want, but if you violate the truth you will get burned.

Just Thinking….

I heard a quote similar to this one on a podcast this week:

You can tell when truth finds its mark, just like a stone thrown at a pack of dogs, by the one who barks the loudest.

Take a little bit of time after you read this post and ask yourself two questions:

Is there something you have heard recently that is making you “bark”? If there is, you need to consider it, because you could be on the wrong path, or you could be right and you need to stand up and speak out.

What makes our culture, our media, our government “bark”? Don’t join the “barking,” instead pick up the truth.
