Buried Treasure

September 12, 2009

This past month Mom and Dad moved to a new home.  Since they moved into a place 70% smaller (and 100% nicer!), the family had to pitch in and determine what to pitch out.  My job was to sort through the thousands of books and determine which ones to keep.  (I am happy to report that we were able to get rid of three of them!)

As I was sorting through the books I realized that many of them had been read and underlined by Dad.  Jackpot!  There is nothing better than reading through a book and seeing what your Dad thought was important, and then really understanding where your Dad’s ideas came from.  And of course, when your Dad is Zig Ziglar, it is even better.

As I was flipping through one of the underlined books I came to a part that caught my eye.  Dad had underlined a great deal over a series of pages on the subjects of faith, business, and prosperity.  The author was making the point that in Hebrew the words for faith and business are very close in meaning.  The author pointed out that in order to be truly successful in business (or in sales), you do the work first and then you get paid.  This takes faith!  Faith that your hard work will be rewarded.  The author then points out that societies that have a high level of faith in God tend to be much more prosperous than those that don’t because faith is like a muscle; the more you use it, the bigger it gets.  Faith in God literally allows you to have more faith in your business and that your hard work will pay off.

This belief is really a cornerstone of Dad’s philosophy, “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”  I think it’s pretty amazing that Hebrew, God’s language (and which Dad cannot speak or read), is in perfect harmony with this major principle.  It really does help when you know the author personally!

Speaking of authors, and the book I am referring to, the story gets better.  Finding the underlined words from Dad was like finding buried treasure.  The coincidence (God’s way of staying anonymous) is that the title of the book I am referring to is Buried Treasure by Rabbi Daniel Lapin.  Imagine finding buried treasure in Buried Treasure!  What a double blessing!

(Side note:  Rabbi Lapin will be leading a Ziglar Success 2.0 webcast with us on September 15.  The subject:  Boost Your Income – 3 Spiritual Steps to Success.  Register Here – your first time with us is Free!)

A Little Too Much Success

June 4, 2009

Last night was the launch of our new program, Success 2.0.  Our first webcast, Finding Hope in Turbulent Times, was awesome!  We spent weeks preparing for the event and making sure that the live streaming video went off without a hitch.

Believe me, it can be nerve-wracking building a studio with three cameras, running everything through a “brain” called a TriCaster (which I call Hal), and then through an encoder (kind of a universal translator that allows the message we send to the Internet to go really fast and smoothly) out to our friends at Multicast Media, who then distribute it on an incredibly large global content delivery network so that people can get the live streaming video almost instantly with incredible quality.  (That was a long sentence!)

Of course, just because we do everything right doesn’t mean that the user can still get it.  The users’ computers need to be up to snuff, their browsers and firewalls need to allow the video stream in, and they need to have fast enough Internet access to get the stream in high enough quality to make it worth watching.

Then, of course, once you get all of those things figured out, you have to make sure that you have enough people online watching the event.  We did a great job on this as well.  Right at 1000 people registered for our first webcast — about double what we were hoping for.  Double is good!  Yeah Us!

Well, this is where too much Success comes in.  Part of Success 2.0 is a chat room feature that allows participants to ask questions while they are watching the awesome live streaming video.  Part of the cool factor is – you learn live, you ask questions live, and at the end we answer questions from people all over the world, live.  I call this real-time, relevant, customer-driven training – Success 2.0.

What we didn’t anticipate was that our incredible attendance and the participation in our chat room would bog down our website server, make the chat room experience difficult, and worst of all limit the number of people who could log in.  Don’t get me wrong, most people got in and the reviews have been incredible, but still, even one person denied access is one too many.

So here is the scorecard:

Content and Message of Webcast        Awesome
Quality of Streaming Video                Awesome
Number of People Registered            Way Awesome
People Logging On and Chatting            Room for Improvement!

So here are our next steps (these are good lessons you can use in your own business):

1.     Transparency – Tell the story and the whole truth.  We had a huge success and we frustrated some people.  Do we have an awesome product with Success 2.0?  YES.  Will it be better next time?  YES.  Do we need to contact everyone who got frustrated during the log in?  YES.

2.    Fix the problem – The good new is this is an easy problem to fix.  Multiple servers and more capacity will do the trick.

3.    Go the extra mile – Everyone who experienced any sort of difficulty getting in will be getting a note from us, and a free guest pass to the next event.  (I am not going to pass up a chance to show off our new and improved server capacity!)

4.    Go the extra extra mile – Everyone who registered for the event will be getting a link so that they can watch the webcast in our replay room and a link to download the audio of the event so they can take it with them.  We want you to have the information as much as you do!

5.    Shoot straight – We believe our message and this technology can reach and change lives all over the world.  In order for us to do this we have to be profitable in the process, which means our goal is to convince our guests to subscribe to Success 2.0.  But first, we must deliver value.  After all, a wise man once said “You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

Please join us on our next Success 2.0 webcast!  If you like, leave a comment for me and I will get back to you.

Ziglar Success 2.0

May 19, 2009

(a sneak peak at today’s newsletter announcement)

This week is a momentous week at Ziglar as we introduce our new cornerstone program – Success 2.0.

The name Ziglar is synonymous with success, so much so that in 1998 the publishers of the … for Dummies books invited Zig Ziglar to write Success for Dummies.  In fact, all of Dad’s writings, speeches, and recordings center on the subject of success – how to get it and how to keep it!  But not just success as the world sees it; rather, as balanced success that covers every aspect of life – physical, mental, spiritual, personal, family, career, and financial.  As a reader of the Zig Ziglar Newsletter you know that we cover all of these areas on a regular basis.

So how is Success 2.0 different?  As you know, we now live in a 2.0 (two-point-oh) world where things are changing rapidly.  The economy, the political landscape, globalization and technology are rapidly altering the way we live our lives and impacting the decisions we have to make.

Success 2.0 recognizes that the foundational keys to success never change – honesty, character, and integrity — but that the way to access, learn and adapt success principles is changing at nearly warp speed.

Success 2.0 is simply a program that delivers the truths that never change on a technology platform that brings live, interactive webcast training to your computer.

Last year we surveyed you, our newsletter subscribers, and asked this question:  How can we better serve you? The answer that came back over and over again was this – Can you deliver personal and professional instruction through the Internet so that we do not have to spend so much time and money getting access to what we need?

Oh, and you asked one more thing:  Can you make it personalized and timely, based on what is going on in the world today?

I am proud to say that this is what Success 2.0 delivers.  Live, interactive video training on your computer.  Here is how it works:

*Have you ever watched a video online, like on YouTube?  Success 2.0 is live streaming video delivered in very high quality.

*To access the live Success 2.0 webcast all you do is register and then log in at the time of the event. Life-changing training is delivered to your computer – live.

*Success 2.0 training is interactive.  Once you register for the event you can send in questions ahead of time to the presenter.  Not only that, but our special chat feature allows you to ask questions during the presentation. Every Success 2.0 session will conclude with answering your questions.

If you have ever thought to yourself, “I sure would like to go to that event, but I just don’t have the time or money,” then Success 2.0 is for you.

Success 2.0 comes to your computer, live, and you get to ask questions!  How sweet is that!

Keep your eyes peeled as we will be announcing the first Success 2.0 webcast event in the next couple of days.

Best of all, your first experience will be as our guest!  We want you to experience the benefits of Success 2.0 first-hand.  I look forward to seeing you soon, live, on Success 2.0.

To your Success 2.0 future!

A Simple Success Formula

May 8, 2009

Right…. Ok, so there probably isn’t a simple success formula, but I think you will agree that without these four elements success will be very unlikely.  I also realize that there are more ingredients as well and I would love it if you would comment and leave the ingredients we should add.

(Hope x Attitude x Action x Skills) + Integrity = Long-term Success.

Hope – without hope, why bother?  Hope is the spark that lights the fire that encourages you to just start, to give it a try.  As John Maxwell says, “If there is hope in the future, there is power in the present.”

Attitude – the right attitude keeps you going; the wrong attitude shuts you down.  Hope may get you started, but keeping your attitude right pulls you through the tough times.  Your attitude is your choice and your responsibility.  Once you realize you “own” your attitude, you can then create a winning attitude by filling your mind and your life with the good, the pure, and the powerful.

Action – nothing happens until your thoughts turn into behaviors – action.  The right actions done in the right way get results.  Even the right actions done poorly will get more results than taking no action at all.

Skills – learning new skills, honing the ones you have, preparing to be the best in all that you do, this separates the good from the great.  To go to the very top, attitude and action are not enough.  They both have to be driving great skills.

Integrity – who wants fleeting success? No one.  As Fred Smith said, “Every great failure is a moral failure.”  Don’t waste your time developing your attitude, your action plans, and your skills if you don’t do everything with integrity.  Your success will be fleeting and your life will be unfulfilled.

Recommendation: Review these five things every week and pick one to work on.  If you ranked your attitude as a 1 for the week, how much more would you have gotten done if your attitude was a 2?

So what other things do we need to add to our success formula?  Please comment!
